Girton College was the first women’s college. It opened in 1869. This was followed two years later by Newnham and then New Hall/Murray Edwards opened its doors in 1954. The other colleges followed suit albeit slowly (although Hughes Hall jumped in in 1949) until Magdalene finally admitted women in 1988. The latest data (1) shows that 51.5% of undergraduates are women The University was founded in 1209. So, there’s 660 years of history for the women to content with.
